switch seamlessly between power sources or use both simultaneously.


How It All Works Together


Starting and Low-Speed Driving


When you start a Toyota hybrid, it often begins in electric-only mode, especially if the battery is
adequately charged. At low speeds, such as in town driving or during stop-and-go traffic, the
electric motor takes the lead.


Acceleration and High-Speed Driving


When more power is needed, such as during acceleration or driving at higher speeds, the
gasoline engine kicks in. The electric motor provides additional torque to assist the engine,
ensuring smooth and powerful acceleration. The power split device allows the gasoline engine
and electric motor to work together efficiently.


Regenerative Braking


One of the most innovative aspects of Toyota's hybrid system is regenerative braking. When you
apply the brakes, the electric motor acts as a generator, converting the kinetic energy of the car
into electrical energy. This energy is then stored in the battery for later use. This process not only
recharges the battery but also reduces wear on the brake pads.


Cruising


At cruising speeds, the hybrid system optimizes the use of both power sources. The gasoline
engine might be the primary source of power, but the electric motor can provide assistance as
needed to improve efficiency. The system constantly monitors driving conditions and adjusts the
power flow to maximize fuel efficiency and performance.


Idle and Low-Speed Electric Drive


In situations where the car is idle, such as at a stoplight, the gasoline engine can shut off to save
fuel. The car can then restart smoothly using the electric motor. Additionally, during low-speed
electric drive, the system can run on electric power alone, further enhancing fuel efficiency and
reducing emissions.
